Ways to light the living room

Posted on May 14, 2009 – 3:02 pm -

Often the living room is considered to be the center of the daily life. It’s there that you take a rest after a busy day at work watching television, inviting guests or entertaining the children. It may be the case that you’re not able to notice but all of these activities depend on the lighting. Bright and warm living rooms attract more attention than the rest of the room. To create the effect more than a fixture or a simple lamp will be needed.

Regardless, the living room of your choice needn’t be expensive for the effect to be achieved. The room should be lightened using its elements to achieve the effect and simply employing more light. Such elements are the rugs and furniture, walls and in some occasions – accessories. These several ideas are easily employed.

More sunlight should be used as it is the best light for a room. Having larger windows allows you to use them as the only source of light throughout the day. Combined with yellow or cream area rugs they help you enjoy a room that is brighter and doesn’t depend on a non-natural light source.

It should be noted that there are two types of lighting that can be combined for an effect- ambient and task lighting. Sconces that are mounted provide ambient light that can replace a lamp. Task lights are used to light areas for reading books, where someone plays or the family watches television. Ensure you consider all the areas. Color can be brought into the room by the use of oriental rugs that easily become a focal point.

Don’t consider fixtures that hang high. It has been a trend for some time for the designers to move lights far from the ceiling. To achieve a better effect lights should be stationed along walls and you shouldn’t rely only on a single chandelier. Controlling lighting on a wall is achieved easier and is calming for the eye. When talking about lighting a particular area (or task lighting), think about using a floor lamp, regardless of the fact that it uses more area. It can be easily moved to a place of your interest. For a narrower premise recess lighting is a good choice that is able to create atmosphere.

Let your items be lightened. Are there any sculptures, antique collections or paintings you aim to present to your visitors? Having spotlights in your living room is a way this can be accomplished. Sconces can light up wall accessories when stationed on either side and the same is achievable with movable lights that can be stationed on different walls. A focal point can be created when rugs and spot lighting are combined. When rugs are braided they are pleasing for the eye and are a great addition to the wooden furniture in your home.

Having to rely on non-natural light is a choice you have to make sometimes. Be sure to go for fabrics that are bright and avoid dark ones. Such fabrics that are both bright and soft will do well for rugs, carpets, upholstery and curtains. Heavier colors should be limited so that the room accents are preserved and you’re sure that the latter dominate. Earth colors in your scheme can be brought to life with rugs having red color or blue pillows that are bright.

Children’s bedroom design ideas

Posted on May 14, 2009 – 2:36 pm -

How should a bed in a children’s bedroom look like?

- When considering buying a bed, take your time to think about it. Beds featuring racing cars will grab the attention for a year or two but then become outgrown.

- Considering bunk beds always ensure they have additional side guardrails that will protect.

- Beds should be stationed near a wall and not just randomly throughout the room or below a window. More area is thus freed, which reduced the danger for the kids when they try to reach the window through the bed.

- Try decorating the beads using quilt covers that are themed and patterned. When your children grow up these can later be replaced. Fabrics that will allow you to wash them with a machine will be a good idea for smaller children.

Bedroom furniture for children! Buying bedroom furniture requires you to consider several points. First of all consider it as a money and style of life investment. In our business of selling furniture we often ask if you’re looking for a bed that you’ll throw aside in a short term or you’re aiming for a quality one that you’ll be appreciating for long. If it’s not the case that you’ll be using the bed only for a short time, my opinion is that quality is the only answer. Wooden furniture that is massive and built in a proper way is the superior choice. Aim for heirloom quality and this will ensure you follow an approach that is optimal. In this context look for the following:

1. Tops that stand solid on the cases and the wood they are made from has at least 3 inches in width, glued on the edges and the grain is reversed. This ensures the massive tops will not become split when environmental conditions are in effect.

2. Go for the French dove tail construction when choosing drawers. This way you will assemble the drawer fastest. The front end of the drawer must be also massive and should not be glued or reinforced by nails.

3. Wooden glides for drawers are known to have been used for centuries in fine furniture. Often cheap drawer slides made of metal are put by manufacturers on the side of a drawer. This way no value is added to the furniture as the metal slides will soon start rumbling and rattling.

4. Lined with velvet or felt and jewelry drawers are luxuries but not considered to be a necessity.

5. Drawers must be able to resist dust. Dividers should prevent the dust or any other particles from moving between layers or from one drawer to another.

6. Drawers made of cedar are the superior choice for furniture and they add value to it.

7. Armoires for entertainment purposes must employ pocket doors or such that are wrapped around. Thus they are kept out of sight when moving through the room.

8. A voice that is not necessary should be avoided through a secure bed assembly. A screw assembly is the best way to attach the footboard and the headboard to the side rails.

9. The TV armoire should include wire so to ensure you don’t have to drill holes.

Observing these guidances will help you purchase bedroom furniture that brings peace and comfort and ensures its value is lasting.

Tips for decorating a small living room

Posted on May 8, 2009 – 5:59 pm -

Ever wonder about the way a small living room should be decorated? Such a room can attract your attention the way a large room can. It can look one of a kind and also have features that are occasionally not present in a room that is larger.

Do you have ideas for the decoration of your small living room? Perhaps you should consider the purchase of a mirror that is large and will become the object that attracts the most attention in the room.

Another way the decoration of such a room should be approached is by altering the arrangement of the furniture. For example it can be distanced from the walls, which is what is recommended for rooms that are small. Using slanted furniture may add some uniqueness to the room as well.

Let us now examine the accessories that are present in your small room. Having too many accessories for home decoration will divide the space, so having fewer is advisable. Use such that you love for their qualities and you’re willing to display them. To make the room less encumbered try grouping the accessories instead of leaving them scattered through the room.

Consider using crown molding for the small living room. Such a decorative molding will create an illusion for space and height thus making the room an attractive one. An eye looking at the ceiling is tricked in thinking it is higher. You can make your choice between using the same color for painting the molding as the one used for the decor or instead going for grain molding that uses wood and represents a great addition to the room.

You must aim at bringing more light to the small living room and a feeling of open space too. The addition of light fixtures will reflect the light from the ceiling. The room in this way radiates a more hospitable feeling, as when the eye looks up, the room looks tall and the atmosphere is wonderful.

Floor carpets having different textures, colors and patters may bring uniqueness to the small living room. They make the room look more spacious in dept but don’t take away the space needed for accessories and furniture.

We often overlook the fact that a small living room is made look spacious simply by washing the windows. They should be kept clean and shiny and the same is true also for the rest of the surfaces, such as TV screens, tables with glass tops and mirrors. A simple idea like this one makes your home a more hospitable and inviting place.

Fresh ideas for home decoration and interior design

Posted on May 1, 2009 – 10:55 am -

The thought of decorating your home may look a little intimidating to you at first. Some home owners do not concern themselves with it but rather prefer to leave things the way they are. Some turn to professionals for help and advice not knowing exactly how to proceed or what kind of approach should be taken.

The one thing that represents your personal space is your home.
Ask for advises should you need help and be sure to review the journals for interior design or just check online to become inspired. If the time is right for decision making they will be yours.  Comfort is of prime importance when we’re talking about your home so take your time and consider the possibilities as you’ll be the one living with the choices that you make. Focus on your room and the design that seems natural. For example the fire place could be ornate and windows could have architectural elements or position.  Choose to start from here.
Decide what your upholstery, flooring and fabric will be and don’t go for the paint on the walls first.  Later on mixed paint can be applied in the color of your choice thus complementing the soft furniture and matching it right when the time has come.
It rarely brings good results trying to make all things match so don’t run for it. Having various textures is a far better idea and also consider the floral and stripe patterns that make the room stylish.
Covering the surfaces with all the valuable possessions you have will only make the room look fussy, so try not to do so. Choose from those that you love the most while giving them room to be enjoyed by visitors.
Find out which is the window treatment that is practical the most and fits best the design of your choice. Blinds that are vertical or curtains that come in traditional or Venetian style are types of window treatments that are considered most common. Curtains can be used separately or combined with a blind. The dressing of the window should be chosen with care, as it also gives you light, privacy and insulation from the elements. An inseparable part of the design, scheme windows should not be put second in thought.
Should it be the case that you have bare carpets, more choices are presented to you. It’s a low cost decision to buy such and use them to cover bare surfaces. It may do for awhile.  In time however you’ll have to replace them with some trends that are latest such as floor boards that are stripped, in case your floors are wooden. If you decide to strip the boards, you may find the idea cost effective, but time consuming. This is especially true when the boards are not positioned well or there’s a lot of varnish that has to be removed. Professional advice is recommended in this case.
If your home is modern and your floors concrete, it’s worth considering a laminate floor that imitates wood. The rugs you already have can be put to use still on either surface as they combine well with the furnishings.
If the furniture you brought is outdated and doesn’t match well to the interior, perhaps because it is inherited, try finding a way to bring it to a better condition. The effect you strive to achieve can also be reached by painting the furniture on some parts or adding cushions and throws.
